What even is Football?

Okay, so I realize that not all of you are big football fans, hell you might not even know what I'm talking about in my other posts. so let me explain the great sport of football for all those who could probably care less!

First you'll notice I reference the "AFC" and "NFC" very often.
These are just conferences.
Each conference has 16 total teams.
These 16 teams are divided into 4 divisions. (North east south west) (4 teams for each)

So for example, if you see that I'm referencing the NFC south I'm talking about those 4 teams alone.

Playoffs: okay you should all know this (I hope). The playoffs are the quest to the Super Bowl for teams good enough to get there (super bowl= champion)

Here's how the playoffs work
There are 12 spots for teams in the playoffs (6 for AFC teams,  6 for NFC  teams)

8 of those spots are for the division winners in each conference. (so the team with the best record in each division gets a playoff spot)

The other 4 spots are wild card spots.
The wild card spots are for teams that were good, but just not good enough to win their divisions.

Once the playoff teams are set,the top two teams (ranked #1 and #2) in each conference get a free bye week. (Meaning they were so awesome they get a week to rest up and prepare for future opponents, it's basically a free victory.)

While these teams rest, the other playoff teams compete in whats called "wildcard weekend" (it is called this because every game contains a wild card team)
In each conference the #6 team plays the #3 team while the #5 teams plays the #4 team. (Yes I realize this sounds confusing, I'm trying to make it simple as possible)

After wild card weekend, the teams that won move on to the divisional round. At this point the top 2 teams of each conference come into play.
#1 ranked team plays the lowest ranked team that survived the wild card round
#2 ranked team obviously would then play the 2nd lowest ranked team.

Okay, after these matchups have happened. There is 4 total teams left (2 in AFC) (2 in NFC).
The two in the NFC compete while the two in the AFC compete.

After that, the winner of the AFC conference (best in AFC) plays the winner of the NFC (best in NFC).
This is the Super Bowl. It's best vs best to determine who is the "better" best. ( if that makes sense.)

So that's how the playoffs work and basically how all the teams are structured. If I confused you just ask me to clarify something.

Other football terms and facts that might interest you:
There have been 47 Super Bowls (this year will be 48th)

The franchise (team) with the most Super Bowl victories is the Pittsburgh steelers (they have 6)

The only undefeated team in history is the 1972 Miami dolphins with a perfect record if 14-0.

The basics
I won't write every rule in the NFL just some simple things
Each touchdown is 6 points. After teams score a touchdown they have a choice to kick a 1 point field goal or go for the two point conversion (ball is placed on the two and they need to try to get back into the end zone)
4 quarters (15 minutes each)
A runner is down when a knee touches the ground.
Pulling a offensive players face mask is a 15 yard penalty.
If a team doesn't get to the end zone but are close enough they get to try a 3 point field goal.

The above things were just some that came to mind, there's a lot more to football than what I've mentioned.

NOTE: the goal of this post was to educate you in terms of football information. (Hopefully you learned at least one thing). If you didn't, well then you probably already knew everything about football.

Any questions you have? Feel free to ask!
My next post (in which I update my rankings) should be up by Thursday for those of you who are interested.

Sunday Results From Week 15!

It was a crazy, action-packed day in the NFL so without further ado lets get to it!

New Orleans Saints @ St. Louis Rams.
If you told me prior to this game that the Rams would dominate the Saints,  I'd say you were out of your mind. But sure enough, that's what happened. Drew Brees threw some uncharacteristically bad passes that ended up being picked off. Kellen Clemens played good enough, and had the help of his trusty  RB  Zac Stacy in the running game. Rams upset the Saints here, which leads to another interesting matchup between  Cam Newton and Drew Brees this upcoming week.

New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins.
I called it going into this one for the Patriots. It wasn't going to be easy and, well, it wasn't. Tannehill had a solid day throwing for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, lifting the Dolphins past the Patriots 24-20. A game which ended with Tom Brady throwing an interception in the end zone. Ouch.

Green Bay Packers @ Dallas Cowboys.
If any of you know me, you know I am a hardcore Dallas Cowboys fan. That being said, this game was a huge disappointment for me. The Cowboys dominated the first half, leading 23-3 going into the 3rd quarter. But Green Bay got back into it. This game came down to poor management and awful play calling. As a cowboys fan I see it every week. No matter how good Demarco Murray rushes the ball, lead or no lead, Bill Callahan (the offensive coordinator of Dallas ) and Jason Garrett ( head coach) insist on throwing the ball. For those of you who are not well versed in football, I'll explain. When a team is leading late in the fourth quarter, the idea is for that team to run the ball to ensure that the clock keeps moving, so that the opposing team does not get another chance to possibly win. Well, someone tell that to garrett, because he doesn't understand that concept. Boy, watching this game enraged me, and for those who wish to put the blame on Romo....please zip it, this loss goes so much deeper than just Romo. Anyway, all hope is not lost for the Cowboys, as they still have a chance to come away as the winners of the NFC east division. Here's hoping they don't blow it next week!

Philadelphia Eagles @ Minnesota Vikings.
Well this game was surprising. The Vikings dominated a pretty good Eagles team and ended getting the win 48-30, without their star running back Adrian Peterson. A crushing loss for the Eagles, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Washington Redskins @ Atlanta Falcons.
Well, the story of this game was Mike Shanahan sitting RG3 in favor of Kirk Cousins. Cousins had a pretty solid performance, but the Redskins end up losing this game on a failed two point conversion attempt in the final moments.

Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars.
Not much was on the line for either of these teams in this contest, but nonetheless the bills ended up winning 27-20. Not a bad victory. I will say, through the past few weeks the Jaguars have proved they are not the worst team in the NFL, who knows they might actually be on the rise. Of course this season is over for them, but they could make some noise in the next couple seasons perhaps. Just have to wait and see.

Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans.
The Texans look more and more like they'll end up with the worst record this season. They haven't won a game since week 2, and at this point it doesn't look like they'll win another one this year. As for the Colts, they get a good win. Maybe they can build off it,because they've been struggling as of late. This however, is a step in the right direction for sure.

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs
Oh boy, Jamaal Charles absolutely exploded in this game, putting up 5 touchdowns, himself alone. Just a purely dominant performance from the Chiefs and Charles here. Wow. Great win for Kansas City.

Seattle Seahawks @ New York Giants.
Was there really ever any doubt? The Giants have struggled all season long and the Seahawks have dominated all year long. The Seahawks get the shutout, beating the Giants 23-0.

San Francisco 49ers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It was all 49ers in this one, though Tampa Bay did have its moments. Important win for the Niners, as this keeps them in a close race for the NFC wild card.

Arizona Cardinals @ Tennessee Titans.
Speaking of NFC wild card, the Cardinals needed a win just as much as the Niners needed theirs. They got it, but not before the Titans forced it into overtime. Despite Tennessee's valiant effort, the Cardinals ended up with the 37-34 victory in OT.

New York Jets @ Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers had a good game against a struggling Jets team, and ended up with a key win 30-20. The question remains though, will they be able to beat their division rival, Saints next week?

Chicago Bears @ Cleveland Browns.
In Jay Cutlers  first game back from injury, he and his bears were able to top the Browns, however it was not easy. Nonetheless the Bears win 38-31 and remain atop the NFC north.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals struggled tonight in primetime, trailing 24-0 at one point. They did make a small comeback, but when it was all said and done the Steelers beat their divisional foes 30-20.

Games Of The Week

The regular season is coming to a finish in the next 3 weeks of the season, and for some teams that means each game is vital if they want a playoff spot.  With that said I've highlighted three games that I think are the most crucial this week for every team involved.

Patriots @ Dolphins:  The Patriots may be in some trouble heading into Sunlife Stadium on sunday. they're facing a Dolphins team that just seems to have some sort of spark lately. Ryan Tannehill is no Tom Brady of course, but don't count him out.  Tannehill is a solid QB and he's got some talent around him as well. Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace are probably the biggest names on the receiving core for the Dolphins, but Tannehill's favorite target as of late is Charles Clay. Clay is probably the closest thing the Dolphins have to a Rob Gronkowski of the patriots, in terms of playmaking ability. Speaking of Gronkowski, Brady will be without him for the rest of the year.  So, needless to say, the Patriots will struggle without him.  In terms of importance, the Dolphins need this game to stay in a packed hunt for the AFC wildcard spots. As for the Patriots, they need it to stay in control of the second seed in the playoffs.

Cardinals @ Titans:  If you ask me, this is one of most important games of the week, simply because of the two teams involved (More for the Cardinals though).  On one side you have the Cardinals who have had a solid season but are in a tight battle with the 49ers for the final wildcard spot in the NFC. (assuming the Panthers already have the other wildcard locked up, which they do, in my opinion.) So every game for the cardinals is a crucial one.  Which brings me to the Titans.  Well, the Titans are a great example of a team thats had an up and down season.  They're on the outside looking in, as far as the AFC wildcard race goes and pretty much every game is a must win if they have chance. Bigger game for the Cardinals, as a loss here could crush their playoff hopes.

Ravens @ Lions:  This is the game of the week. The defending Super Bowl champs are heading into Mo-town on some kind of a roll.  The Ravens are looking to grab one of the two AFC wildcard spots while the Lions are trying to win the NFC North division, and are currently tied for the lead in the division with the Bears.  The Lions are an annoying team. I think they have a solid team, they have great receivers, and great run game, a great QB, and a decent defense.  You'd expect them to be running away with the division, but it seems they just find ways to lose.  Who knows, maybe they're too young of a team to handle the pressure. Anyway this should be a great game, we'll have to see what happens!

On a side note,  I'll personally be looking forward to the Cowboys game, because they are my favorite team.  GO COWBOYS!!!!!

A Huge Comeback, A Tie, and other Results from Week 12!

Saints @ Falcons
This was closer than expected for me, but my prediction was right in the end. Saints won.

Jets @ Ravens.
Geno smith did not perform well at all in this game and the Jets mustered nearly no offense scoring only 3 points. I would say they should throw in the towel, but the Jets have been unpredictable week to week, so I guess you can't rule them out yet.

Steelers @ Browns
Well, before this game I wasn't quite buying in to the Steelers recent successes, and I still don't think I am. This was a good game for the Steelers though. Even though this was an "easy" opponent the Steelers looked strong. I still have my doubts though...

Panthers @ Dolphins
I was right, well kinda. The Panthers didn't look like themselves for much of this game. But Cam Newton once again lead the panthers to a last minute victory. Solid game by the Panthers. Crushing loss for the Dolphins.

Buccaneers @ Lions
Well, the Buccaneers seem to be on a roll lately. Well kinda. They just beat the Lions for their 3rd straight win. Not that it matters, because they have no chance at the playoffs. I can't understand the Lions. A couple weeks ago they looked dominant and now they seem to be collapsing, but they still have time to turn it around.

Bears @ Rams
The Rams were dominant in this game, but again it likely doesn't matter for them, because they have a slim chance at the playoffs. The Bears are starting to show signs of struggle without their starting QB Jay Cutler. He should be back soon, and then maybe the Bears can get back in the swing of things.

Vikings @ Packers
The Vikings started off strong, but after Matt Flynn came in for the Packers the Vikings had no answer. This game went into overtime and the winner was......no one, it was a tie. I hate ties in the NFL. It has no purpose at all. They should play till someone wins.

Jaguars @ Texans
That's it, I give up on the Texans after they lost their ninth straight game....to the Jaguars.  Apparently I'm not the only one who has given up, as Andre Johnson said after the game about his own team "We suck".  Well how about that. I guess Johnson is right, I just wouldn't expect that coming from him.  In any event, the Jaguars really aren't any better. Both these teams should just look forward to the draft next year.

Chargers @ Chiefs
This game surprised me. It was back and forth action from start to finish with the Chargers just beating the Chiefs in the end. It's the second straight loss for the Chiefs but they're still the real deal. And the Chargers must have some big time confidence after this win. They could make a run for a wild card spot in the playoffs. I personally think its unlikely but hey, who knows?

Cowboys @ Giants
The Cowboys, with a banged up defense and all, shut the Giants down this week to move to a record of 6-5. The Giants did a whole lot of trash talking prior to this game, even guaranteeing a win, but in the end Romo lead the Cowboys down the field in the last minutes to put the Cowboys in position for the winning field goal. This crushes playoff hopes for the Giants but puts the Cowboys in first place in the NFC east.

Colts @ Cardinals
Well I mean, I predicted the Cardinals would win, I just didn't think it would be such a one sided game. The Cardinals are getting better each week, meanwhile the Colts are slowly collapsing. They need to do something to fix that or else it will be a short playoff run for them, if they get there.

Titans @ Raiders
The Raiders and Titans were neck and neck in this game but in the end, literally in the final seconds, the Titans pulled off the win with a touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick. If the season ended today the Titans would be in the playoffs as the final wildcard team. Maybe they can catch some momentum off of this win, my guess is they won't but hey, anything can happen. As for the Raiders, this is simply just a crushing loss.

Broncos @ Patriots
I've saved the  matchup everyone was waiting for this week for the end. It was Manning vs Brady for the 14th time. Going into the matchup Brady had won 9 matchups against Peyton, and Peyton had the other 4. The Patriots looked awful in the first half and many people thought it was guaranteed that the Broncos would win. Well, Brady and the Patriots came out to start the second half on fire. Before you knew it the game was headed to overtime. The teams went back and forth trying to win but no one was making any mistakes, that is of course until Denver made the biggest mistake of the game. The Patriots were about to punt it with about 2 minutes left in overtime. The punt was good, Welker (the ex-Patriot) waved for a fair catch, but decided not to play the ball. But then the ball bounced and hit a Broncos player, making it a live ball for anyone to grab. The Patriots grabbed it, and all they needed to do was kick the field goal. And that's what they did. This was a very anti-climactic way for the game to end, but it was better than a tie. As I predicted the Patriots won. Now, in terms of, Brady vs Manning, Brady has 10  wins, Manning has 4.

Week 12 Predictions.

Week 12 predictions:  Time for my weekly predictions, last week my record was (7-8)
(7 right, 8 wrong). Hopefully more will be right this week!

Saints @ Falcons: The Saints are on fire and the Falcons are the exact opposite, expect a saints victory here.  Official prediction: Saints win

Cowboys @ Giants: This one will be close. The Giants, since coming off a bye, have won 4 in a row and stand at (4-6), but believe it or not they still have a chance to win the NFC east, a division that has been struggling. The Cowboys are an even .500 on the year (5-5), and they're coming off a bye. You name a defensive player on the Cowboys, and they've probably either been injured, or currently are injured. Key Linebackers Sean Lee and Justin Durant are missing for the Cowboys in this game, and that could be a huge factor In this game. However, I have my doubts on the Giants being able to slow down Dez Bryant. Even though the Cowboys are banged up defensively, I think their offense alone can win this game for them. Cowboys win a close one. Official Prediction: Cowboys Win.

Broncos @ Patriots: The Broncos will be on Sunday night football for the second straight week after handing the Chiefs their first loss last week, and the Patriots could use a win after their contraversial loss to the Panthers on Monday. The talk of this game will be Brady vs Manning. I strongly believe that the Patriots come out with the win in this game, they'll be extra motivated based on that loss Monday that left a sour taste in their mouth. Patriots win by 3. Official Prediction: Patriots Win.

Panthers @ Dolphins: The Panthers are on top of the world after beating the Niners and Patriots the past 2 weeks. This has "trap game" written all over it. The Panthers are good, but they're young and they could easily fall victim to the Dolphins if they don't take them seriously. The Panthers slip up and lose to the Dolphins. Official Prediction: Dolphins Win.

Buccaneers @ Lions: The Buccaneers aren't the worst team in the league but they're close to it.  And with that being said the Lions lost to a struggling Steelers team last week, so they'll be fired up going into to this one. And I don't care who is covering Calvin Johnson, he's going to have a field day against anyone.  Official Prediction: Lions Win.

Jaguars @ Texans: Man, this is a battle between two pretty awful teams. Last week Texans star wide receiver Andre Johnson got into a argument with his QB Matt Schaub. The constant losing is starting to ruffle some feathers on the Texans, but you really can't get worse than the Jaguars. Expect the Texans to win this one. Not because they're a great team, but because they're just not as bad as the Jaguars. Official Prediction: Texans Win.

Vikings @ Packers: The Vikings have struggled all season, and the Packers are still without Rodgers, however the Packers overall are the better team. Official Prediction: Packers win

Chargers @ Chiefs: Although the Chiefs lost their first game last week I believe that loss will only make them stronger. Chiefs will win this one easy. Official Prediction: Chiefs Win.

49ers @ Redskins:  The Niners will get the win this week against a Redskins team that has struggled immensely this season. Official Prediction: 49ers Win.

Bears @ Rams: The Bears, as I predicted last week, one a close one. Well, this one will not be as close, and the Bears will win easily. Official Prediction: Bears Win.

Jets @ Ravens: The Ravens suffered a heartbreaking defeat after a long day last Sunday and they're going against a Jets team that has alternating Wins & Losses through the first 10 games of the season. So if their pattern continues this week, the Jets will win. And that's also my prediction, as the Ravens have struggled as of late. Official Prediction: Jets Win.

Steelers @ Browns: The Steelers are coming off a big win for them this season but I think the browns will best them this week. Official Prediction: Browns Win.

Titans @ Raiders: The Titans lost a key game to the Colts last Thursday, and that crushed their playoff hopes. The Raiders are having a similar season in terms of disappointment, but I think they'll win this week. Official Prediction: Raiders Win.

Colts @ Cardinals:  The Cardinals have been a surprise this season and are currently tied for 2nd in the NFC west (with the Niners) at a record of (6-4). And as for the Colts they've been very inconsistent as of late. Call me crazy, but I like the Cardinals to win this one. Official Prediction: Cardinals Win.

Monday night football results

The Patriots faced the Panthers this Monday and boy was it an entertaining game. As you'll recall in my predictions for this game, I said that the panthers would crumble under the pressure of the spotlight. But I could not have been more wrong. Cam newton and the panthers played toe-to-toe with the patriots all night long. Trailing 20-17 with a little over 6 minutes to go cam newton lead the panthers offense down the field to score a touchdown with only a minute left for Brady to try and come back. The score being 24-20 the patriots needed a touchdown to win. With 3 seconds left it came down to Brady vs. the panthers defense. Brady throws and it's intercepted by the panthers. A flag was thrown but later picked up. Needless to say Brady was pissed. From what I saw it was a good non-call. Both teams are 7-3 now. The panthers are the real deal. This was a statement game for them. Wow. Player of the game goes to cam newton, no doubt.

Week 11 Predictions:

Colts @ Titans: I like the Colts to win tonight. They have more star power on the offensive side, and a better defense.  Official Prediction: Colts get the win on the road.

Jets @ Bills:  Ed reed will make his debut for the Jets on sunday, and his first game as a member of gang green is going to be a win. Official Prediction: The Jets win easily.

Ravens @ Bears: The Bears have been a little banged up as of late, and will be without Jay cutler when they face the defending super bowl champions on sunday.  The ravens are coming off a clutch win last sunday against the Bengals, and that could give them some confidence heading into Chicago. This will be a close one, but I give the edge to the home team. Official Prediction: Bears win a nail-biter.

Browns @ Bengals: The Bengals are coming off a depressing loss against their division rivals last sunday, but they'll rebound this sunday with a blowout victory against another of their divisional rivals, in the Browns. Official Prediction: Bengals win easily.

Raiders @ Texans: Both of these teams have struggled this season but I like what Case Keenum has been doing for the Texans lately. Official Prediction: Texans win.

Cardinals @ Jaguars: The Jaguars should be proud as they won their first game of the season last week.  That being said they'll return to their losing ways this week. Official Prediction: Cardinals win.

Redskins @ Eagles: This will be a top game of the week without question. An NFC east showdown in Philadelphia.  Foles looks to have seized control of this offense, but don't count out the Redskins. This game has upset written all over it. Official Prediction: Redskins win in the final seconds.

Lions @ Steelers:  The Lions lost to Chicago last week but they'll come out firing on all cylinders against a struggling Steelers team on sunday.  Official Prediction: Lions win.

Falcons @ Buccaneers: Both of these teams from the NFC south have struggled this season, the Buccaneers obviously being more of a victim. Even though they got their first win this past monday, I like the Falcons in this game. Official Prediction: Falcons win.

Chargers @ Dolphins: The Dolphins have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately with the recent bullying allegations coming out.  It was too much of a distraction against Tampa Bay last week, and it will continue to interfere with them this week. Official Prediction: Chargers win.

49ers @ Saints: The Saints are on a roll, and I mean a roll. Drew Brees cannot be stopped, and lately Rob Ryan's Defense has looked unstoppable. This is a no-brainer for me. Official Prediction: Saints Win.

Packers @ Giants: Rodgers is out due to injury, and Mike Mccarthy says Scott Tolzien will start against the Giants sunday. We'll have to see how he fairs against a Giants team on a winning streak. This might be a close game but I'm going to go with the Packers to get a big win against the Giants.  Official Prediction: Packers Win.

Vikings @ Seahawks: The Seahawks have Percy Harvin returning this week and that will only make them more dangerous. Easy pick here. Official Prediction: Seahawks win.

Chiefs @ Broncos: Oh boy, this matchup will prove to be a good one, and its on the perfect stage, Sunday night football. Primetime. The Chiefs are undefeated, but by the time this game is over they will have lost their first game. The '72 Dolphins can rejoice in knowing that they will still be the only ever undefeated team in NFL history. Official Prediction: The Chiefs Lose their first game to the Denver Broncos.

Patriots @ Panthers:  The Panthers are looking very good lately, and this is a huge game for them. They have a strong defense, but will they be able to stop Tom Brady and the Patriots? It's certainly going to be a close one, but the Panthers won't be able to handle the pressure of being on the big stage of Monday night football.  Official Prediction: Panthers crack under pressure and the Patriots take advantage. Patriots win.

Ed reed

Ed Reed has been signed by the New York Jets after being released by the Texans earlier this week. This will prove to be a big boost to the Jets secondary as Reed is a future hall of famer. We'll have to see how successful his run is with the jets, as the texans did not quite work out as anyone expected.
So is this a good fit for Reed? What do you think?
